The Murau Brewery can trace its roots back to 1495, making it one of the oldest breweries in Austria. It has been organised as a co-operative since 15 August 1910 – today it is owned by 468 regional members who work together to ensure the brewery’s continued existence and development.
Particularly in this part of Styria, where corporate beers dominate, the local people remain firmly loyal to their Murau Brewery – this loyalty is an unbeatable asset and extends far beyond the region.
Thanks to its cooperative structure, the brewery is free from short-term pressure to generate returns, enabling long-term, values-driven management. Since 2014, Murau has been achieving CO₂-neutral production using 100 per cent renewable energy – a milestone that makes the brewery one of the pioneers amongst European breweries. “Our hearts beat for the region – we brew beer that brings people together,” says Managing Director Sepp Rieberer.
In Murau, the art of brewing – balancing tradition and innovation – combines centuries-old craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology: a historic deep well on Raffaltplatz supplies crystal-clear water directly to the brewing kettles, whilst the barley and hops are sourced from long-standing partner farms in the region. Classic Märzen, mild Zwickl and full-bodied Bock have repeatedly proven their quality at the prestigious European Beer Star Award. At the same time, contemporary pale ales and non-alcoholic beers are produced, which impressively underline the brewery’s high standards of flavour.
