Wine means a great deal to this family. It is the result of a complex interplay between terroir, people and decisions. For generations, wine has shaped the Johanneshof in the Thermenregion, south of Vienna. It has been cultivated slowly, consistently and without haste – driven by the conviction that it is always the sum of many small and large parts that ultimately makes the difference.

What once began with half a hectare now spans 40 hectares around Tattendorf and Gumpoldskirchen. It is not intended to grow any larger. Not for lack of opportunity, but out of conviction. Manageability breeds precision; precision breeds character. This applies to the vineyards just as much as it does to the grape varieties. Rotgipfler and Zierfandler are just as much a natural part of the mix as St. Laurent and Pinot Noir. Each variety is treated as a distinct entity, without rigid formulas and without lumping them all together. Pinot Noir, in particular, demands the utmost attention and rewards it with elegance, depth and complexity – qualities that run through the entire range.

The estate has been certified organic since 2013. Permanent cover crops, sheep, bees, compost, biodynamic preparations and gentle soil management are all expressions of a viticultural approach that views the estate as a living organism. This philosophy continues in the cellar. The wines are given time to develop; they are always matured on the lees, with single-vineyard wines aged in wood or amphorae, and Pinot Noir – depending on the vintage – sometimes with whole bunches. No intervention is excessive, no step is taken too soon.

With Sebastian and Thomas Reinisch, the fifth generation is now bringing new ideas to the table whilst building on the family’s experience. Since 2026, the Schlafgut has also complemented the Johanneshof, transforming the family estate into a place where wine, hospitality and the landscape come together. Together with the Restaurant Thomas, where Thomas Reinisch cooks with a healthy dose of ambition, curiosity and a passion for authentic produce, this creates a holistic experience that consistently carries forward the winery’s philosophy: the best results come from synergy. From generations, personalities and perspectives. Quite simply, from the sum of all its parts.
